A Mother's Message to Her Son

"The words of King Lemuel, the utterance which his mother taught him." Proverbs 31:1

King Lemuel's mother's words made such an impression on him that he remembered them well and wrote it down. The result, is that it’s placed in the Bible as a memorial for mothers to glean from so we can share its principles with our own sons. As I read, a few themes popped out. Here are three things that King Lemuel's mother shared to encourage her son.

1. Guard your Strength

A son is to be encouraged not to give their strength to women. Kings in those days sometimes had many wives. That would sometimes drain the resources of the kings's wealth. It is relevant in our day because, many times men can fall morally because of their lack of self-control, discretion, and wisdom concerning how they deal with women.

In the same vein, King Lemuel's mother encourages her son not to give his ways to things which destroys kings. Again, having self-control, discretion, and wisdom in how you deal with your desires is vital in order for a king to rule well. Our sons are also sons of the King. They are to rule with wise discretion and self-control.

2. Remember Your Identity

A son must be encouraged to not use things like a "strong drink "to forget their troubles. She reminds him of who he is. "It is not for kings to do certain things.'   A son is to be encouraged of his identity and realize that who he is determines what he does. Some things just are not fitting for royalty. When you have a special mission, your mindset and habits need to be properly managed.

3. Use Power Justly

Lastly, she emphasizes the importance of opening his mouth to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. The word justice is a dirty word in some circles. But we cannot deny what is clearly said hear. Kings and those in power are to speak for the speechless, and "plead the cause of the poor and needy" Our sons, our kings, if they rise to power in their families, churches and communities, are to use their power for good. Just as Jesus used His power for good.

These are examples to us. Let us not forget the impact we have on our sons. May our words be implanted deeply in their heart that they may remember them always.
